MRI hardware, from first principles to production.

Foundation Imaging Systems is a contract design and manufacturing organization in London, Ontario. We design, build and test custom MRI hardware for system manufacturers and research groups, from gradient coils and superconducting magnets to the safety analysis behind regulatory submissions.

Physics and the shop floor, under one roof.

Our team pairs PhD physicists with technical specialists in precision fabrication, assembly and testing. Working side by side, we connect electromagnetic theory with what can actually be built, tested and certified.

Foundation Imaging Systems is a new company, but our team’s experience in MRI hardware spans decades, from academic research to commercial products. Before joining the company, members of our team helped take MRI hardware from prototype through FDA and Health Canada clearance to scanners now in use at hospitals and clinics across Canada and the United States.

Capabilities

We work with MRI companies, startups and research institutions whose applications call for more than a standard scanner offers. Engage us for a single subsystem, an analysis or a complete prototype.

Gradient coils

Our core expertise. We design, build and test gradient coils large and small, including asymmetric and special-purpose geometries for applications that standard designs can’t serve.

Cryogen-free superconducting magnets

Conduction-cooled superconducting magnets that operate without a liquid helium bath. Our design methods suit application-specific requirements, such as compact, short-bore and low-power systems.

RF coils

RF coil design and modelling, with particular strength in transmit coils, including B1 field and SAR analysis.

MRI safety modelling and regulatory analysis

We model the static, gradient and RF electromagnetic fields of your system to support IEC 60601-2-33 compliant technical documentation, including static field maps, nerve stimulation limits, worker exposure and RF heating.

Design studies and analysis

Simulation, feasibility studies and design reviews for research groups and companies exploring new hardware ideas, from early concepts to custom instruments that open the door to new discoveries.

Assembly and testing

We assemble gradient coils, magnets and RF coils in our London facility, from precision winding and vacuum epoxy potting through final integration, and make the custom components each build requires. Subcomponents are tested throughout, and every build is traceable under our quality management system.

How we work

We can join at any stage, or carry a project from start to finish.

  1. Concept

    Requirements, architecture and feasibility.

  2. Design and simulation

    Electromagnetic, thermal and safety modelling.

  3. Prototype

Fabrication and assembly in our facility.

  4. Verification

Testing against specification, with the evidence your regulatory file needs.

  5. Production

Repeatable, traceable builds for your product line.
